The tests themselves are run using basic principles from the scientific method. This allows for accountability and for the experiment to be reproduced.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Searching the internet for tips is a terrible way to learn SEO<\/strong>. On any given topic three different experts will tell you that something is a ranking factor, three other experts will tell you that it isn\u2019t, and yet another 3 will tell you \u201cmaybe.\u201d Additionally, <strong>Google itself will often release unclear statements about what affects their algorithm.<\/strong> I have made it my quest to determine whether something really is or is not a ranking factor by actually testing it in a methodical, scientific manner. <strong>Instead of relying on what someone tells me, including Google, I do the legwork to find out the truth. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Beyond just learning more about SEO, there are real world implications to these test results. Clients constantly ask whether they should implement this or tweak that. Relying on something that was read in an SEO blog is not a long term success strategy. \u00a0<strong>Additionally, no project has unlimited time or an unlimited budget. \u00a0As a professional, you need to know what really works so that you are not wasting time and money.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is why I do SEO tests<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>Concerning statements that Google makes about the algorithm, below I detail an interesting test that I published in December 2017.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hypothesis<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Google limits SERPs to one exact match domain (EMD).<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Background Info<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a recent <strong>Google Webmaster Hangout<\/strong>, as reported by<strong> Josh Bachynski, John Mueller<\/strong> stated that Google has a filter for <strong>Exact Match Domains (EMDs).<\/strong>\u00a0That filter will only allow one EMD per Search Engine Results Page (SERP). If it is true that Google will filter EMDs <strong>there could be many ramifications on not only affiliate marketers but businesses that use or are considering using an EMD for their company website.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Test Setup<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Three EMDs were purchased for a random three word phrase. I looked at my desk and picked out three words that produced some but not many results in Google when searched together. In this case, the combination <strong>microphone, cup, and mouse<\/strong>, produced the best results. I then purchased:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Microphonecupmouse.com<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Microphonecupmouse.co<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Microphonecupmouse.info<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you\u2019ve done any testing you know the difficulties with using duplicate content on homepages and getting the domains to index. To avoid indexing issues, <strong>I optimized all three homepages similarly but used unique content and unique h tags.<\/strong> \u00a0For example, my H1s on the domains were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Microphone Cup Mouse You Need &#8211; Microphonecupmouse.com<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Number 1 Microphone Cup Mouse &#8211; Microphonecupmouse.co<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Best Microphone Cup Mouse &#8211; text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Results<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>All three EMDs are on page one.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Analysis\/implications\/application<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to <strong>John Mueller, three EMD\u2019s shouldn\u2019t all be on page one of SERPs.<\/strong>\u00a0Two of those domains should have been filtered. \u00a0Clearly, there is no filter being applied in this situation. \u00a0Let\u2019s look at the possibilities of why the test produced these results:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>It\u2019s a time thing, the algorithm will catch it sometime in the future<\/li>\n<li>John intentionally lied<\/li>\n<li>John was lied to by someone else<\/li>\n<li>John just makes stuff up<\/li>\n<li>There is a filter but it\u2019s manual not algorithmic. Your niche\/keyword needs to be important enough to have manual curation. \u00a0Google will filter out extra EMDs manually, where appropriate<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I think your preference for which answer is correct depends on your level of cynicism.
